Cayuga & Seneca Canal used to be smaller than it currently is the canal handled small packet boats that were pulled by horses or mules. Within what is the Historic District of Seneca Falls the Seneca River dropped approximately 45 feet. There were eight to twelve locks located in this 3/4 mile stretch of the river. In 1917 the canal was drastically altered to accommodate larger ships o­n the canals.
